The british MkIII was produced from 1897 to 1903. They are only in red and green.
The MkIV was produced from 1903 to 1915 with White, green and red stars.

Welcome somd_mustang, There is no material claiming different s/n from various navy yards. I doubt they used differnt serials. When the Mark II came into existence circa 1903 many of the older pistols (Model 1996) were upgrade to Mark II by changing their barrels to barrels stamped Mark II. No docum...

Look at my posted pictures above and then look at your 2 boot pistols,
is it possible that your pistols were meant to be muzzle loading pistols
that shoot aerial flares?

I have seen 2 Model 1882 Navy Very Pistol having no marks of proof or Manufacure.
The barrel has no finger groves front or backl.
Also no lanyard rings.

Evidence indicates the Very system (flares & Pistol) was patented in Italy circa 1879.
