No4 Mk1 and No4 Mk1* Made By Singer Manufacturing SURVEY

Post by AlanD » Sun 27 Jan 2019, 03:02

I recently purchased a book published by Singer Manufacturing Co of Scotland after the war, Singer In World War II - 1939 - 1945.

In the book it states that 26,800 No4 one and a half inch pistols were made by the company, with production finishing in September 1945.

I think these pistols have a serial number prefix of SM but may bear the Ministry of Supply manufactures code of N67.

If anyone has one of these could they please post details such as the serial number, is it a No4 Mk1 or a No4 Mk1*, is there a date on the gun, like 1943, 1944 or 1945. Also, are any of the components marked N67 or are there any other manufacturer code number which start with S or M or N?

Many thanks.

Hello, I have at least two. One was converted into an electronically fired Pistol for mounting in an aircraft.

They are marked SMNo." 4 Mk 1* 1945 " on the barrel.

The * star indicates the addition of a safety.

There is no N67 on mine. Serial number begins with a capital "A"

The one in front of me is # A13592 and is the Electronically fired example.

There is also an additional # "SP 1490 70 C" , This is raised embossed, not stamped in the metal and located on the barrel.

Also there is an S.M stamped in the frame.
Guns have only two enemies, rust and politicians.

I am still looking for ANY information regarding the European Use of the Original Costons flares from 1859 through 1881. Photo's, Patents, contracts & orders, ANY INFORMATION IS NEEDED ! !

Does the book indicate when they started production?

t recognise SM as Singer till I joined this site so I learnt something.
LHS stamped: SM No4 Mk1* 1944. No A 3619. RHS marked with raised: 6 diamond with maybe an A in it? SM on LHS frame.
It has a brass top latch and a brass trigger guard. Hope this information helps.

@ Alan:
LEFT: SM No 4 MK I * 1945, A 16046 and upside down: SP 1490 17 CT, below security knob: S.M.
A little round stamp: T.S.M. Co Ltd and a 12 in the middle: left side trigger, left and right side of fixing latch,
left and right side of the "hammerhousing" (near the firing pin) and in front of the fixing knob on top of barrel.
RIGHT: None, except for the 2 little round ones (see above)
by the way, I`m not sure, what the difference is between No4MK1 and Mod. M ?

Kind regards
Manfred
