Strange Model L?

Post by Peter »

Good morning!

What kind of Model L is this?
Grip has different shape
Grip plates are wood
No maker.
Stamped H811 on butt.

Prototype?

Hi Martin,
Thanks for your reply!

No, it is not mine...unfortunately!

It is not a Sander; they are "Sander" marked and have the "normal" Model-L grip, only with wooden plates.

This example apparently has no maker markings and a totally different grip with a lanyard loop at the back.
On top of the barrels, it has the "4" markings for the caliber and there are no WaA or other acceptance or proof marks.

It would be nice to identify it.
Hopefully someone can point us in the right direction.

Hi Horst & Martin,

That is the one; only the "Sander" stamp in missing and the barrels seem a little bit longer.
It must be a somewhat rare flare gun.

Thanks for you replies and pictures.
This is a great forum with great experts!

The flare gun was sold at auction last night: $5500, excl. buyers premium etc.
Nice price!

I was second highest bid at $5250.00. but was off the computer, so I could not raise my bid. With buyers premium, buyer paid close to $6500.

I was curious as to the marking on the Butt. It was pretty high for such a rare pistol to be a serial number.
Guns have only two enemies, rust and politicians.

I am still looking for ANY information regarding the European Use of the Original Costons flares from 1859 through 1881. Photo's, Patents, contracts & orders, ANY INFORMATION IS NEEDED ! !

I have seen a similar mark on another flare gun butt recently, but I cannot remember on what type.
It must have been German though...maybe it comes back to me...

I am approaching 50...is forgetting things like these the beginning of the end???
