Re: Model of 1894
Just so you know, The flaregun you show is a conversion of the Model 1882 to 1894 Caliber and added extractor. There is another flaregun that is the true Model 1894. To my knowledge there is only one Model 1894 known serial #58. The Excellent price guide, and Catalog of American Antique Firearms by Norm Flaydermann is just plain wrong on this one. He did not know I discovered the true Model 1894 when his Price guides were puplished.

Guns have only two enemies, rust and politicians.
I am still looking for ANY information regarding the European Use of the Original Costons flares from 1859 through 1881. Photo's, Patents, contracts & orders, ANY INFORMATION IS NEEDED ! !

Re: Model of 1894
Both the M1894 with only one example known, and the model 1882/94 conversion to 1894 style are quite rare. Only about 200 of the 1882's were manufactured ( there could possibly be a second contract no one knows about. ), Of which many in service were converted to the Model 1894 style and caliber by 1) sleeving the barrel to 10 ga., 2) The sleeve considerably longer than the 1882 barrel ( compares favorably to the true 1894 and later Model 1896 and Mark II's ), 3) An external extractor was added, quite crude, but effective.
Over the years I have run across 15 or so 1882's and about the same number of 1894 conversions. So I guess about half of the 1882's were converted.
I would appreciate any additional information anyone could supply on these three rare and early USA flare pistols ( 1882, 1882/94 conversion, and 1894 ).
