Swedish 2-Barrel Brass Flare Pistols Model 1896

Post by signalman »

I have 2 of the Swedish Brass two barrel flare pistols in my collection. One arrived today from Sweden, The one with the lanyard ring and Swedish Military crown proof on the Breech. Serial # 184 internally.

The other has not been manufactured with a lanyard ring. It has No serial number, and hammers and triggers are in the white, it could be a prototype, or just early production variation.

Guns have only two enemies, rust and politicians.

I am still looking for ANY information regarding the European Use of the Original Costons flares from 1859 through 1881. Photo's, Patents, contracts & orders, ANY INFORMATION IS NEEDED ! !

Can somebody give me the model name & year of these pistols, and translate the inscription on the backstrap of the military model ( Note, after the word " Hanarna " it has the word " vara " ).

I have not seen that variation before. I like how the hammer extensions keep the barrels closed ( a safety feature ?)

The photo is a little dark, Is there a button or break open latch under the barrels, or is that a peg in the wall that the flare pistol is resting on ??

Sorry for the poor quality of my picture. I will try to take a better one. The opening device under the barrels is the same as on your models.

Signalman;

Those two flareguns you have was named "Signalpistol m/1896" and where made by Husqvarna Vapenfabriks AB. Total number of production was somewhere about 250 pcs.

I don´t have so deep knowledge in the English language so I can´t exactly translate the sentence on this very gun, add to that it´s written in a partially old fashion Swedish.

But the meaning is "During loading must the hammer be in half cocked position"

Attached photos of two pistols with different hammers. Those guns belong to the Swedish Army museum in Stockholm.

I just received an example of the 1896 with the hammer extensions over the barrels, I can find NO markings except for the number 8 on all the screws, so I guess it is serial number 8. That makes three variations in my collection.

Now I just need some period flares, and perhaps a holster - if they made one.

Find today two rare brass cases, used together with the m/1896 flare pistol.

Both marked with the Swedish Navy "crow foot" stamp. and year of production May 1945 and 1946, a J thru a N, probably producer? and another unknown number.

75 mm long made of brass, primer lacks on both.
