The british MkIII was produced from 1897 to 1903. They are only in red and green.
The MkIV was produced from 1903 to 1915 with White, green and red stars.
The MKV is war to post war

Not quite correct. I have Mk111 flare in white with a half knurled rim.
Also I have a blue flare Mk1V with two quarter rim knurls for ID.

Here is a rare Blue flare cartridge. Brass case , dark blue paper at mouth and rim is milled two quarters for identification.
The other cartridge is also scarce. Kirkee Indian loaded Illumination Mk11 with dim ignition.
