"Lake Erie Chem. Co." Flare gun

I purchased this Lake Erie Chem. Co. Flare gun.
It is chrome/nickel plated brass, s/n 1493, stamped "Lake Erie Chemical Company Cleveland Ohio".
I cannot find much information about this piece.

Any remarks with regards to the background (manufacturer, age, numbers made etc.) are welcome.
