I picked this up at an antique mall. It is a WW II vintage U.S. Navy Hand Projector MK 4, repackaged for civilian sale post war. Probably post WW II but maybe Post Korean War. The cartridges are not military; they are Western SUPER-X 10 Gauge shells, loaded as flairs, one has been fired, and no, I didn’t fire it!
The projector is marked on the rear of the locking collar: U.S.N. HAND PROJECTOR MK-4-CONTRACT NoNORD-656 E.V.C. Co. just as stated in Gaynor’s book. Of course, “E.V.C. Co.; is Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Company.
This is what I call a “Swords to Plowshares” item.
Thanks for looking.

If you read the “instructions” and are familiar with these projectors, you will note that the chain and the safety have nothing to do with each other, the chain holds the pieces together when loading and unloading, while the safety is a small lever just beneath the base of the handle. Interesting error!

Very nice, I have not seen that particular set before.
Guns have only two enemies, rust and politicians.
I am still looking for ANY information regarding the European Use of the Original Costons flares from 1859 through 1881. Photo's, Patents, contracts & orders, ANY INFORMATION IS NEEDED ! !
