Excellent photos.

The Chubb is a late one being s/n 487. I see it is dated 1915. All the Chubb's I have seen with a serial number higher than 500 have been dated 1916.

Greener was the only British manufacturer to make the No1 Mk111* signal pistol. They did not make many about 3,000 judging by the serial numbers I have noted.

CSR Australian made. A colleague of mine here in Australia has assembled a lot of information on these Colonial Sugar Refining No1 Mk111* pistols.

What is the title of Dr. Bruno Baumgarten's book? I am aware he produced a calendar with photos of signal pistols.

The book is an encyclopedia of light and signal guns in five volumes. The first volume will appear in February and deals with German guns in five chapters: Kaiserreich, Weimar Republic, Third Reich, GDR and Federal Republic of Germany. All volumes appear first in German, and after the translation also in English and French. A detailed performance is given when the first volume is available.

This survey has been going a while so I thought I would post some information that has come to light during this time.

Woolsley[/u] Mk111* Pistols:
Highest known number with 1917 date on frame 12156
Lowest known number with 1918 date on frame 15520
All the above whether 1917 or 1918 marked carry a '18 inspection or proof date.
Any pistols that turn up within this gap would be of interest in determining the change over from 1917 to 1918.

Cogswell & Harrison
The lowest serial number I have seen is 51490 dated 1915, by 52523 the date is 1916.
So the company must have been allocated a serial number range starting at 50,000?
Highest known number is in the 77XXX range.

Chubb
Three pistols now known above the previously accepted figure of 500. The highest being 898, so it looks like Chubb's got a second contract for perhaps another 500?
Up to 500 all dated 1915, after 500 all dated 1916.

WW Greener
1538 is dated 1915
1870 is dated 1916, so transition must be somewhere in between.
Highest known number 3645 dated 1916.

This survey is on going so please let me know if you have any new examples for me.

Thanks Tony.

I assume 63918 is a Mk111 and has not been upgraded to Mk111*.

76242 is the highest full serial number I have seen, with one that looks to be 77XXX, but is hard to read.

Cogswell serial number seem to have started at 50,000 in 1915, the lowest I have seen is 51490 and continued through to 1918 by which time they were making the Mk111* version.

Out of 32 recorded numbers I have only seen one dated 1915, as above and now including your pistol 5 dated 1918.

Regards

Alan
