J. PAIN & SONS, LONDON AN UNUSUAL PRE-W.W.I BRASS 1IN. LINE LAUNCHER , based on an early model flare pistol, 4in. black powder only two-stage barrel signed 'J. PAIN & SONS LONDON' at the breech, frame with spur trigger, walnut grips, the barrel with a large cylindrical canister mounted on each side, each canister with a hinged door at the rear and a conical front with a 1 1/8in. opening, together with an cartridge with J.P. & S head stamp firing a wad set with an iron loop.
The canisters would not be able to hold a thick line, nor does the cartridge have the energy to throw a heavy line. It was for launching a light line which would enable a heavier line to be manually pulled across.
Patented in Great Britain in 1903. Tested by British government and found to function well but of no use with a maximum range of only nine yards. Five years later they patented a new type of cartridge in an effort to extend the range.
This may be a prototype used for patent and testing.

Re: James Pain & Son's Patented Line-Throw Pistol.
This is not a flare cartridge but rather a special cartridge for carrying a line in the special hoop at the front.
