This is I believe to be a Turkish Flare pistol with Smith & Wesson Model 3 frame.

This is another example of a Turkish Flare Pistol, This time with a longer barrel, Farsi writing, and a Double Action Smith and Wesson Frame.

Hello,

the first shown pistol is a Russian Model 1916.
The grip section was taken from the revolver model 1874.

Thank you very much, This is the first time I have gotten any specific information on this model flare pistol. I have had several with Farsi type markings, and have seen at least two more with the same style markings and remember seeing in some old literature reference to it being Turkish.

Positively Finding out it is Russian is why this forum is so important to flare gun collectors.

Any Idea as to what the second pistol is ? Would it be a middle east copy of a Russian flare pistol, or do you think it is also Russian ??

Considering that the text is in Farsi (presently the language of Iran) one might assume that the gun was produced somewhere in the Khyberpass area (NW Pakistan, East Afghanistan). It may have been based on any of the selfdesigned revolvers they make there. I have seen guns from that area that have design features from all guns in the world, including Mauser bolt actions with Kalashnikov magazines, hand repeating pistols based on Mauser C 96 design and 12 ga revolver shotguns.

Do you have any indication what the text says? My Farsi is a bit rusty ;-)
Are you sure it is Farsi and not something like Pashtun?

I am a total amateur but I think the letters are Arabic but the message is Ottoman or Turkish.

This flare gun is identified on the Austrian War Memorial website as a Turkish flare gun. The model shown there is said to have been captured on Gallipoli by Farrier Sergeant John Thornhill Belcher of the 5th Light Horse Regiment.
