Wow what a great collection you have , you are well on the way to having an example by each maker by year, just need a Chubb!

W&S 689 1912. Is this military marked and does it have a lanyard ring, also does it have a smooth barrel profile or a slight step as is normally seen?
W&S 1243 1913, as above.

Cogswell & Harrison 75072 1918. This is the latest year I have seen, I would have thought it was 1917. I have seen 74114 dated 1917 which is a Mk111*, are you able to check the date again please and confirm it is a Mk111*?

WW Greener. One wonders why Greener got a contract for these in WW2, bearing in mind the huge quantities produced 20 years earlier. I don't know the quantity of the contract but it looks like a couple of thousand only. My example is dated 1941 and is a Mk111* but does not have the flared barrel extension - how about your 3?

CSR. A colleague has found a considrable amount of information on these Australia produced pistols. It will be in the book.

Wolseley: are 4664 and 2938 marked on the frame - Wolseley 1917 - in large letters? Is the barrel marked 17 or 18?

WW Greener Quite a rare gun, I have seen examples up to about 2500 into 1916, for years all I saw were 3 digit number making me belive the contract was only a thousand, you live and learn.

Wolseley 2076 1917. Does this early production pistol have - Wolseley 1917 - on the side of the fram under the barell. Is the bareel marked 17 as well?

Cogswell & Harrison 73977 1918. Interesting, this is a lower serial number than 74114 dated 1917. Is the barrel dated 17 or 18? Looks like there may be no clear cut off date for yearly production. I would be most grateful for some pictures of this pistol to use in the book, if that's OK. My e-mail is in my first post at the top of this page.

I see you have a Chubb 412 dated 1915, these are hard to find.

Wolseley 3864 1917/1918. Is it marked 1917 next to Wolseley on the frame with the barrel date being only two digits 18 -?


It's interesting that all three of you have early 1917 Wolseley's I have been trying to find one for years!

Serial # 537 Chubb

Hello, My W&S Mk III*'s #689 and 1243 are both military marked, and have lanyard ring as well as the flared barrel extension.

The Cogswell & Harrison #75072 1918 is indeed dated 1918

The WW Greeners do have the flared barrel extension.

I have not located my Wolseleys yet

All my MkIII*'s have the Belled (flared) barrel extension. All have Lanyard Rings
All my MkIII's have NO Belled ( flared ) barrel extension. All have Lanyard Rings
The Mk II has NO lanyard ring, and of course no barrel extension.

Hi gents,

I have the opportunity to buy a 1916 Chubb.
It seems to be in fair condition.

Can anyone give me an indication of the value here in Europe?
The asking price seems a bit steep, but there is no reference to be found.

Looking at the UK second hand gun sites, most No1 Mk111 and Mk111* signal pistols seem to be priced at 200 to 450 pounds, even quite common ones such as Webley & Scott,Cogswell & Harrison and Wolseley. Chubb pistols are rare and only come up for sale occasionally. The contract records indicate a quantity of 500 only was ordered, but two examples are known in the 6XX range.This is a tiny quantity compared to the 330,000 odd made by the the above three company's, in total.

If the price is around 1,000 Euros I would buy it, you will not see another one for a long time.

Can you please post the serial number and is it dated 1916 or 1915??

Hi Alan,

I missed the Chubb, someone else is the happy new owner.
Asking price was 400 Euro.

It does not have the barrel extension, is dated 1916 and has serial number 516 (see picture).

I saved some more pictures, if you want them, send me a PM with your E-mail.

This is now the third Chubb I have recorded with a serial number higher than the previously accepted figure of 500.

I wonder if Chubb got permission to do a parts clean up and ended up supplying another 150 or so. They did have trouble making them in the first place.

Just come across a Chubb No1 Mk111 on the internet with good photos.

It is serial 898 and dated 1916. I now believe that there was a second contract or the first contract was extended from the original 500 pistols. This is now the 4th Chubb pistol I have seen above serial number 500.
