Prototype Aluminum Walter SLd

Post by Mark »

I think Howard has one of these as well so here are my thoughts.

This gun is very difficult to photograph because of the reflection, I'll post better photos when I figure out the correct lighting.

---------------------

I've done a lot of research on the Walther factory and how they helped the manufacturing process
at Spreewerk and Mauser for P.38 production.

Since Walther was the holder of the patent on the P.38 and also the prime
manufacturer it would make sense that they sent engineers to the other
factories to get the tooling correct and also train employees. Walther
sent parts to both factories to help with initial production.

I think this prototype was a model for the guns we see made at eeu in 1943.
I know the prototype was manufactured after 1940 since it has wartime
proofs on it and eeu didn't start production until 1943.

I would think that this prototype was made in the 1941-42 time frame and
then Walther sent the prototype with tooling and engineers to eeu for the
initial production runs in 1943. I looked in the flare gun book and
F.W. Hyem made about 200 early examples of this gun in aluminum, perhaps to
test production techniques on small runs before eeu was fully set up for
large scale production.

The gun is a unique example and the lack of serial number shows it was
most likely used as a tool room sample for production. The screws are a
little "buggered up" and the frame to barrel pin is loose which leads me
to believe it may have been taken apart a few times by various engineers
to check on parts tolerances.

Hello Mark, I was wondering who got this one, it is the only other one I know about. Mine is Mint condition, but I paid quite a bit more for it, many years ago.

I saw the ad for this one when it was for sale, but I guess I was too late. as it was already sold to you.

I also agree it is a prototype, and may have been given to the firm with the eeu code to copy on their tooling.

Our two are Walthers, but I believe eeu is a different company. Are you going to go to the Show of Shows at the end of Feb. If so, maybe we can compare the two in person.
Guns have only two enemies, rust and politicians.

I am still looking for ANY information regarding the European Use of the Original Costons flares from 1859 through 1881. Photo's, Patents, contracts & orders, ANY INFORMATION IS NEEDED ! !

I'll be at NGD/SOS next year but I'm not sure I'll bring the gun. I fly in and fly out so I like to keep room in my case for stuff I find at the show. It is also a PIA at Logan airport when you declare guns but don't get me on that rant :)

I'd like to see your gun when I am there just let me know what table you will be at.
